Competition & Antitrust Lawyer (non-contentious) - Associate/ Managing Associate, 4 - 8 PQE, London

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

  • We are looking for an Associate/ Managing Associate to join our Competition Team, in London. Ideally you will be around 4 - 8 PQE.
  • This is an exciting opportunity to play a central role in working closely with our UK and International Partners on client relationship development and the continued expansion of the team and practice, which will provide clear career progression opportunities at a pivotal stage in your career.
  • As well as our own trained lawyers, we have colleagues who have previously been in international, Magic Circle, City, national or boutique law firms as well as in-house at financial services firms, all of whom enjoy working with us.

THE COMPETITION TEAM

Our team is one of the leading UK focused antitrust practices, with five established non-contentious Partners based across London and Manchester, alongside wider fee earning and support staff and a market-leading competition litigation team (with which we work closely).

The team experienced in managing high-profile antitrust cases and our broad client base of major corporates trust our team with some of the most complex and high value competition enforcement, merger control, competition litigation and counselling matters in the market.

We also work on cutting edge cases in regulated sectors such as energy, financial services, telecoms and rail. Outside the UK, there are now partners specialising in competition law in our offices in Poland, France, Germany, Spain and Ireland.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THIS ROLE

  • As an Associate in the Competition team, you will support larger matters alongside senior colleagues and take the lead in smaller-scale matter management, using strong project management skills to drive forward a range of Competition issues.
  • You will collaborate with colleagues to further grow and develop our Competition business, including involvement in client and targeting teams, and other business development opportunities.
  • You will support the partners and lead key workstreams on mandates. You would be both positively encouraged and expected to participate fully in business development activities, with a view to supporting the future growth and development of new and existing client relationships.
  • Work-types will include merger control, foreign direct investment, cartel work and behavioural antitrust matters, vertical supply-chain strategy, and competition-led regulation such as GSCOP, economic regulation (water, energy, telecoms etc.), transport regulation and antitrust-inspired regulations in financial services, such as rules around open banking and card payment interchange.
  • You will work closely with the competition litigation team, on major influential cases.

YOUR AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE

To be successful in this role, you will,

  • Be an established Competition Lawyer with at least 4 years PQE and strong experience of both merger control and behavioural matters, in the UK and internationally, gained within a comparable environment.
  • Your background will predominantly be in non-contentious competition law with some ability to pivot to contentious to support the wider team when needed. 
  • Be able to demonstrate a strong ability to apply the competition law rules to the commercial fact pattern considering broader commercial considerations and other legal risks.
  • Want to join an award-winning practice that has great breadth and variety to expand your skillset and develop your career at Associate level.
  • Be a team player, motivated and keen to progress to more senior roles within AG.
  • Have enthusiasm for intellectually challenging work, are ambitious and confident to deliver at the highest standard.
  • Take time to fully appreciate clients' needs and priorities ensuring their advice is meaningful, tailored, commercial and delivered with a solutions-orientated and enabling mindset.
